Ernie Ball Music Man Expands Bass Options StringRay 5 and Sterling Bass with Piezo Bridge
Ernie Ball Music Man does it again, creating more sound choices with its latest versions of the popular StingRay 5 and Sterling basses. They're now available with an optional Music Man / Fishman piezo bridge, giving players an even wider palette of sounds to choose from.Using a unique balance control, bassists have the ability to produce a full piezo acoustic sound, a full magnetic sound, or a blend of the two. Both basses have switchable series, parallel and single coil modes for the magnetic pickup. The single coil mode also incorporates a phantom hum-canceling coil to provide less noise in that mode. Controls consist of three-band equalization (treble, mid, bass), volume and the balance control. "The sound that's produced by the piezo pickup is more like an acoustic instrument, with a different tonality," noted Dudley Gimpel, product designer for Ernie Ball Music Man.
Both the StingRay 5 and the Sterling basses are now available with the Fishman piezo bridge option, for an additional $350 on the Sterling and $400 on the Stingray 5. "We've found that a lot of different types of musicians are enjoying the piezo option because of its flexibility - it gives you more of a string bass sound, and can be blended with the famous Music Man magnetic sound," explained Gimpel.
Artists currently using the updated basses include: Tony Levin ( King Crimson, Peter Gabriel); Dave La Rue ( Steve Morse Band, The Dregs, LAX ); Murphy Karges ( Sugar Ray ); Doug Virden ( Sons of the Desert ); Jayce Fincher ( Marvelous 3 ) and Nick Fyffe ( Jamiroquai ). The two basses come in selected hardwoods with a high gloss polyester finish. Color choices include black, white, fire engine red, pearl blue, pearl platinum, pearl lavender, pearl purple, candy red, metalflake green, metalflake brown, black sparkle, translucent red, translucent teal, translucent orange, translucent gold, translucent purple, translucent green, or sunburst. Vintage sunburst, natural, and matching headstocks are available at an additional charge.
