Yamaha Artists Jazz It Up With New Silent Bass at BASSICALLY NEW YORK
Yamaha Corporation of America, Band & Orchestral Division, premiered its new Silent Bass™, the latest addition to the series of Silent String™ instruments, when it took center stage at "BASSICALLY NEW YORK" on October 14, 2000. Internationally renowned Yamaha artists performed using the upright, electric instrument at Hush Restaurant, a trendy dinner club in New York City's Greenwich Village. Sharing the stage was Yamaha jazz guitarist Vinny Valentino and his trio, featuring bassist John Benitez, as well as Yamaha bass guitar artist Chris Minh-Doky and his band.

"Finally an upright electric that sounds great and feels like the real thing!" says Minh-Doky. "However, it's easier to get around town. With the soft bag, I just sling it over my shoulder and jump in a cab."
Designed to be an exclusive evening of performances for professional bass players, Yamaha showcased this musical instrument in a setting where it would typically be heard. In addition, a display instrument with headphones was available to test in a separate room.
With a Maple neck, Spruce and Mahogany body and Ebony fingerboard, the Silent Bass is sized to standard scale and crafted to feel and sound like an acoustic upright. The warm balanced tone of the bass is sure to be appreciated by players and audiences alike. And by utilizing the Yamaha-developed Silent technology, the bass will allow players to practice silently anywhere.
The exquisite instrument comes with a soft case and can be equipped with an optional knee support or stand. What's more, it operates on a single 9V battery or an optional AC power adapter. A detachable frame makes traveling with an upright bass easier than ever.
"It is exciting for Yamaha to celebrate the release of the Silent Bass with participants from the Bass Collective Bass Day and elite bassists such as Carlos D'L Puerto, Larry Ridley and Billy Sheehan," says John Wittmann, Yamaha Artists Relations manager, "and where else to hold the debut of the Yamaha Silent Bass than in the heart of New York's jazz community."
The Silent Bass joins an award-winning family of Silent String™ instruments, including the Silent Electric Violin™, honored by Popular Science Magazine with a "Best of What's New" award in 1998, and two models of the Silent Cello™. The original Silent Cello was recently honored with a bronze medal from Mono Magazine's "Super Goods of the Year 1999" award in the musical instruments/hobby category, as well as the Judges' "Special Award for Design." The Compact Silent Cello™ has won awards worldwide for its design, including the prestigious "Highest Design Quality" award at the Red Point 2000 contest in Germany and a Bronze Industrial Design Excellence Award (IDEA) from the Industrial Designers Society of America (IDSA) and Business Week
